Last week in media: additional details on Disney+ and Apple TV+

(Telecompaper) The media sector was all about streaming video, last week. Walt Disney made new announcements about its upcoming SVOD service Disney+, closely followed by reports on Apple’s TV+ service. The TPSI Global Media index however lost 1.8 percent, against a loss of 1.4 percent for the S&P 500. The best performers included Australia’s Nine Entertainment (+13%) and troubled comScore (+12%). At the other extreme we find Spotify (-6.6%), Salem Media (-6.5%) and Lions Gate (-6.2%).

Baidu surpasses Google in global smart speaker market in Q2

(Telecompaper) Chinese internet giant Baidu replaced Google as the world’s second biggest smart speaker vendor in the second quarter of 2019, according to the latest report from Canalys. Baidu shipped a total of 4.5 million units in the April to June period, just ahead of Google’s 4.3 million and behind the 6.6 million Echo speakers shipped by market leader Amazon. China’s Alibaba and Xiaomi rounded out the top 5 with shipments of 4.1 million and 2.8 million respectively.
