Huawei unveils Kirin 990 flagship chipset with built-in 5G modem

(Telecompaper) Huawei unveiled its latest Kirin 990 flagship chipset during IFA in Berlin. The company said the new chipset is faster, more versatile and energy efficient than its predecessor, the Kirin 980. There will also be a version of the Kirin 990 with a built-in 5G modem, making it the first SoC that will be able to cope with the next generation of mobile networks, the company said. 

Telenor and Axiata call off Asian operations merger blaming ‘complexities’

(Telecompaper) Telenor Group said that it has reached a mutual agreement with Axiata Group to end discussions regarding a combination of their telecom and infrastructure assets in Asia. It said that over the last four months, both parties have been working on due diligence and finalising transaction agreements, aiming for completion in the third quarter of 2019. Because of “some complexities involved in the proposed transaction”, they have mutually agreed to end the discussions.

France adds record 1.13 mln FTTH homes passed in Q2

(Telecompaper) The number of homes passed by FTTH in France increased by a record 1.13 million in the second quarter to 15.58 million. That’s an increase of 32 percent year-on-year, but the roll-out needs to accelerate further, said regulator Arcep in its latest quarterly broadband report.

LG unveils G8X ThinQ smartphone with second screen

(Telecompaper) LG has unveiled its latest G series smartphone at IFA 2019 in Berlin, an upgraded G8 with a secondary display case called the LG G8XThinQ. The device comes with a second screen case that’s the same size as the phone’s primary 6.4-inch FHD+ display, allowing users to activate a second display from settings. Both screens are 6.4-inch OLED FHD+ with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and both have notches, with the second screen also featuring a 2.1-inch monochrome OLED cover display. The ‘freestop’ hinge offers full 360-degree tilt freedom, said LG.
