NBCUniversal names new streaming service Peacock, to launch in April 2020
(Telecompaper) Comcast’s media arm NBCUniversal has announced it will launch its own subscription streaming service in April 2020, called Peacock. The name refers to the peacock logo used by broadcaster NBC. The service will build on the media group’s own archive, with programmes such as The Office and Parks and Recreation, and live events such as the rights to the Olympics in the US, late night entertainment shows and wide news output.
Docomo to deploy 4G/5G multi-vendor RAN based on O-RAN specifications
(Telecompaper) NTT Docomo, in partnership with Fujitsu, NEC and Nokia, has achieved multi-vendor interoperability across 4G and 5G base station equipment compatible with the international standards of the Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) Alliance. The O-RAN standards include fronthaul specifications and X2 profile specifications. Docomo claims this is the world’s first realization of this level of multi-vendor interoperability in 4G and 5G base station equipment conforming to O-RAN specifications. Docomo will deploy the equipment in the pre-commercial 5G service it plans to launch on 20 September in Japan.
Amazon rolls out USD 13 a month Music HD streaming service
(Telecompaper) Amazon has announced the launch of a new high quality tier for its Music subscription service to compete with rival lossless audio streaming players including Tidal, Deezer and Qobuz. The new plan, dubbed Amazon Music HD, lets customers stream more than 50 million songs in High Definition (HD) audio and millions of songs in Ultra HD (UHD), described as the highest quality streaming audio available. HD audio is defined as 16-bit files with sample rates of 44.1kHz and above, while UHD has a depth of 24 bits and a sample rate of 96 kHz to 192 kHz.
Corning gets USD 250 mln from Apple to further glass development
(Telecompaper) Apple is investing another USD 250 million in Corning to help further the company’s development of new glass materials for smart devices. The money comes from Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund, set up to support components manufacturers in the US, and follows USD 200 million given to Corning in May 2017.
FCC authorises start of CBRS commercial deployments
(Telecompaper) The FCC has authorised five companies to start initial commercial deployments of services in the shared 3.5 GHz band, known as Citizens Broadcast Radio Service in the US. The so-called spectrum access system (SAS) administrators are Amdocs, CommScope, Federated Wireless, Google and Sony.
